Since finishing the B29 Crash Site walk, time seems to have just flown by and I was quite shocked to find that it is almost 3 full weeks since I had been out on the hills, so nothing too demanding other than a good leg stretch; Dumfoyn came to mind, a fine little hill with a nice easy track and just a short section of slightly rough hillside would do just fine for a leisurely return to the hills.

A cloudy start but no rain as we wandered along the well defined paths and tracks from Killearn, along a short stretch of the pipeline track and then onto the fine, broad grassy track leading uphill from High Lettre towards the distant crags of the Balagan Tops and The Garlochs which dominate the skyline ahead although distant they stay, as the path swings south to parallel them and their dominance gives way to the mound of Dumgoyne now clearly visible and directly ahead.

The gradient steepens slightly for the pull up to the bealach between the crags of Canny Top and the eastern face of Dumgoyne before the short final pull up the grassy slopes of Dumfoyn where you are guaranteed to a crowd free summit. Crowd free it was, but just as we arrived the only short shower of the day decided to pass over requiring a quick don of the waterproof tops and a rather damp lunch break.

The descent route we took from Dumfoyn to the pipeline track was the only section of rough hillside as we made our way through the long grass and tufts down the gap between Dumfoyn and Dumgoyne, across the small burn and then skirting around the western base of Dumgoyne. The four months or so of summer growth between our last venture along this track and today was very evident, so much so that the lower track we had taken then was completely overgrown and hidden by tall braken forcing us upwards and onto a higher track than planned, before we dropped down a little thinking we could regain the lower track only to be forced back up once again to the higher narrower track along the line of the lower crags. Eventually I gave up on the high level track and dropped down once again and just ploughed my way through the braken to eventually meet up with Ian and Mike as we all converged on the main Dumgoyne track for the short section back down to rejoin the pipeline track just above the distillery from where it was just a leisurely stroll back to Killearn
